So here's how DXVK runs on an integrated GPU .....
After I upgraded my notebook RAM last Saturday , I wanted to try some of my old hardware-taxing games to see how will DXVK (With E-sync enabled) stand on an intel GPU.
It's a low-tier HP notebook with the following specs:
intel core i3 6006 U 2 GHz dual core - intel HD Graphics 520 - 12 GB RAM (Previously 4 GB)
With Manjaro Xfce (Testing branch) installed , I tested 5 games with my comment on every one of them , I played with a controller to decrease the input lag from the low frame rates , also CPU governor is set to powersaver , I tried with performance but I found 0 difference in FPS , Wine 4.10 ge within Lutris is used.
First before I go in topic and people start accusing me of trolling , I'm NOT encouraging anyone to buy the games and play them on this type of low-end hardware , this is just game testing in my free time , don't scroll down if you are from those 4K fanboys !
Far Cry 4 (Ver. 1.10) :
FPS ~15-20 FPS on 1280x720 & ~20-25 on 960x540
Graphic setting Game low graphic profile and no v-sync
Glitch Sometimes invisible rectangles can appear on some buildings textures , but this is not game-breaking at all and rarely happens.
Bug 1 The game has a notorious gamepad support even on Windows , the Xpad driver and xboxdrv didn't help .... I disabled the controller from Wine then used antimicro and mapped the KB/mouse controls to my controller.
Bug 2 You need XACT 64 bit with Windows XP comp. for sound to work in game.
My notes The game has a steady performance , didn't feel any stuttering playing it and can progress quite well.
Grand Theft Auto V (Ver. 1.33) :
Game with D3D10.1
Game with D3D11
FPS @1280x720 runs at ~15-20 in downtown and ~20-25 in more less loaded areas and can reach 30 in quite empty ones (even on foot).
Graphic setting Textures and reflections set to very high with everything else set to normal and no v-sync.
Glitch 1 Game has a weird graphic glitch that happens if not set to very high textures that the terrain begins to disappear under your feet and keeps doing so after some playtime and can be game-breaking , after setting textures to very high the issue has a very small chance to happen.
Glitch 2 Setting textures to very high generates a new issue of some textures of surfaces and cars starts to pop out aggressively on the screen after some playtime , D3D10.1 has a less chance for this glitch to repeat so it's quite more stable than D3D11 , annoying but not game-breaking.
Bug Self radio still doesn't work , I use VLC to be running in the background with antimicro controlling it by the controller , I just leave it open but mute and unmute it when I press Y to enteexit a car .... not the best solution but works good for me.
My notes Despite the mentioned annoying glitches , the game is playable and can progress normally , what is strange is that the game doesn't lose any performance even at very high textures from normal textures and other options don't make a difference either ..... The only option that affects FPS is the resolution which is pretty weird ..... This is the only game that doesn't utilize the GPU fully too , so E-sync is the play-maker here.
The Witcher 3 GotY Edition (Ver. 1.31) :
White Orchard
Novigrad (note that FPS didn't significantly change)
FPS @1280x720 ~10-12 FPS (Even when riding Roach)
Graphic setting Low in-game graphic profile and no v-sync
My notes The game is GPU-thirsty ... there's no 0 FPS drops and it can be played and progress too but despite that , I can hardly name it entertaining to play this way (Maybe because this is my favourite game of the 5) but if you can play it in any other way , I will second you on that .... I still didn't reach Novigrad (The most taxing area in the game) but I will update the post when I go there .... Be aware that this game performs optimally on quad core CPUs and mine is dual , so you could have better luck running it if you have an i5 or i7 mobile CPU.
Kingdom Come Deliverance (Ver. 1.07) :
FPS @960x540 16-20 FPS at average with @1280x720 10-12 FPS (On foot or horse just like The Witcher 3)
Graphic setting Low game profile and no v-sync.
Bug The game will refuse to boot with Windows comp. set to Win. XP claiming that the GPU doesn't support D3D11 .... Setting it to Win. 7 solves the problem.
My notes The game while it has this low FPS , it's quite playable and very stable with no 0 FPS drops (Mainly because it's a dialogue-heavy game with slow-paced gameplay ... total opposite of The Witcher 3) ... This game is the reason why I lost my old R9 270X last November ♥️
Watch_Dogs (Ver. 1.06) :
FPS @1280x720 gets 20 FPS average (On foot or car)
Graphic setting Low in game profile with no v-sync
Bug 1 The game is while playable , is quite unstable ... pressing the profiler button twice (X button) has a chance to make the game freeze ... but that's about it.
Bug 2 The game freezes on the loading screen when DXVK compiles the shaders , exiting then running it again will make the system freeze completely and your only escape is just a hard power off .... deleting DXVK cache after each play session solved the issue (Just made a script to do this) .... what's weird is that this issue didn't happen when I didn't reach the open world yet , after going out to the city it started happening.
Bug 3 Like Far Cry 4 .... it needs 64 bit XACT and Win. XP comp. to play sound in game.
My notes I remember having micro-stuttering issues and 0 FPS drops back in 2015 when I first-time played this game on Win. 10 ... It looks cleaner here despite the low FPS but this freeze issue still giving me headaches , everything else is OK.
Other games I tested/want to test/couldn't test :
Assassin's Creed Unity Those buggy memories I still dream of , but since it's from my favourites I thought about it .... but I'm still replaying the first AC with D9VK at the meantime , so I think I will test it later.
Rise of Tomb Raider Still playing Tomb Raider 2013 sorry 😅
FIFA 17 Doesn't even run mainly because of it's sick DRM (FIFA 15 is same).
FIFA 13 Runs quite good except it has bad menus with invisible text with WineD3D , D9VK still freezes at the menu. ... Perfect
Journey Game runs perfect with DXVK with no bugs or glitches at all .... It's not a resource hog so that's why I didn't mention it with the other 5.
Thronebreaker the Witcher tales This game is a devil , runs whenever it pleases it and may not run at all ... I applied this MF patch to the prefix but makes it run sometimes and 10 times not .... Still borked until Wine fixes it's mp4 videos decoding problem.
Final Thoughts :
I'm seriously amazed , on Windows 10 these games had micro-stuttering and FPS drops mainly because of AMD drivers at the time , I really didn't expect the performance on a weak intel GPU to be even acceptable like this , not exaggerating but FPS while low is very stable and rarely can see stuttering/drops .... I checked some youtube videos for these specific games on this specific GPU with Win. 10 and looks like the performance is quite the same.
DXVK is really doing a great job for the Linux platform in general , and as a final conclusion .... You won't get more or less FPS with DXVK (Depends mostly on the game optimization honestly) but you will get an equivalent performance to the Windows counterpart as long as you know how to deal with these bugs/glitches.
Also GTA V made me reach a serious point , the game doesn't even care what graphic options I select , graphic changes but FPS difference is about 2 or 3 frames maybe , only cares about the resolution but as long as it's playable I don't really care.
All of them didn't have FPS difference whether you are riding a cahorse or moving on foot (Just framerate constant at certain range) , which is very interesting as Windows doesn't behave like that but I see it as an advantage.
Thanks for reading :)
